The season opener this year was on teh 17th March, a bit cool, and wet but not a bad day for being over the west side of the country.
Tiago having decided that he wanted to learn to use a rebreather, borrowed Nic’s unit for the day while SiFish lead him through some basic skills lessons. Judging by the smile on Tiago’s face afterwards, he thoroughly enjoyed diving on a unit, and has made the right decision to buy one too!
Richard dived with Jay, both doing some exploration around the quarry, with two long dives despite the cold temperature of the water… 6c – cold! But as always, the bacon sandwich in the café between dives is the thing that keeps us divers going.
There was a regional event going on at the same time that we were diving too. Dave (also a club member) was playing an unconscious diver, when his little duck friend came swimming over!
Andy Moss from our club was also helping teach, I think he had just been pretending to be a “bent” diver, so they removed his hat to administer oxygen. Scenario over – hat back on.
Warren had succeeded in completing his Ocean Diver theory as well as his pool sessions over the Autumn and Winter. This was his first day out in cold water. He did so well, despite the temperatures. Passing many of the skills he had to perform.
Holding the hoof of a pantomime horse isn’t one of the listed skills, but is a must when at Capernwray! Mask removal and replace in such cold water can be a challenge, but one that Warren took in his stride, which was great.
We came back a week later and completed all of the requirements for Ocean Diver, so we hope this is the start of many days diving with Tyneside 114!
